Über uns

We envision a New York of thriving communities where everyone has a place to call home. Since 1975, Urban Pathways has remained committed to addressing the complex challenges of homelessness and housing insecurity in New York City. Rooted in compassion and driven by a desire for positive change, our team provides thousands of people annually with secure housing, complemented by pioneering and holistic support programs. With a focus on empowerment and collaboration, we envision a future where every person has access to safe, affordable housing and the resources they need to thrive. Within our continuum of care, which ranges from Outreach to Permanent Supportive Housing, we meet each person where they are and walk alongside them on their pathway home.

We are excited to offer a first look at our new 9th Avenue Drop-In Center in Hell’s Kitchen, now in the final stages of construction. Drop-In Centers provide vital services for individuals experiencing homelessness, offering a safe space to rest, recharge, and connect with resources. Our new center, designed with comfort and accessibility in mind, begins in a welcoming entryway with a colorful Urban Pathways mural. Visitors can relax in the first-floor common area, charge their devices, and access restrooms and showers. The second, third and fourth floors house additional common areas, a medical room, and offices where our dedicated staff will meet with visitors and assist them in working toward their goals.   Use the link below to take the virtual tour today and explore everything the new 9th Avenue Drop-In Center has to offer. We can’t wait to open our doors and welcome everyone to this essential new space! https://lnkd.in/eq7Qx2m7 #lightingthepathhome #buildingthefuture

Yesterday, the Mayor's Office for Nonprofit Services held a conference celebrating National Nonprofit Day. This day was organized to highlight the work and impact of NYC’s nonprofit sector on social issues, community building, and driving change. Urban Pathways’ CEO, Frederick Shack, attended the event as one of four panelists, joining Jairo Guzman, Meridith Maskara, and Annie Minguez, and keynote speakers Nathaniel Kendall-Taylor and Laura Rog. Discussions from the panel shared insights on the perception of human services organizations, the future of BIPOC-led nonprofits, and the essential role of nonprofits in community advocacy and wellbeing. Throughout the day, there were many opportunities to connect with other leaders, policymakers, and community members. We are incredibly grateful to share this space with such diverse and empowering voices, and for the increasing awareness around the crucial roles of nonprofits in community development. #EmpowerNonprofits #NationalNonprofitDayNYC

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Jess Harvey, a cherished member of our community and a true champion of our mission. Jessica served on our Associate Board, over the years helping to host barbecues for the people we serve, sourcing donations for our annual holiday gift bags, and working with members of leadership to determine how the Associate Board could make the most impact. Jessica’s commitment to our cause and her unwavering care for those in need will be remembered by all of us, and her legacy of kindness and service will continue to inspire us.

“This is not a one-and-done, this is an ongoing process. It's not a sprint, this is a marathon.” We recently had the opportunity to sit down with two of our supporters, Joe and Ann, to learn about their path to Urban Pathways and what inspired them to get involved in our community. From direct outreach to fundraising, we are immensely grateful for all that they do. Want to read more about their journey and how you can support Urban Pathways? We’re excited to share that Urban Pathways has been awarded a $300,000 grant by The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust! With this grant, Urban Pathways will serve as a member of the Steering Committee for the Collaborative on Housing for Health, giving us the opportunity to expand housing and health models. Ultimately, this generous investment from The Helmsley Charitable Trust will aid in increasing access to longer term housing for health efforts, leverage public funds for this work, establish a clearer picture of unmet housing for health needs, and generate recommendations to improve the placement process. Thank you, Helmsley for supporting our mission to combat homelessness through housing and support services!

In the Summer 2024 issue of Behavioral Health News, our very own Mardoche Sidor, MD, Anne Hanford MPH CHES, Romi Avin, and Jose Cotto, LCSW wrote and published an article on the Total Wellness program and its impact on older adults. Established in 2015 and expanded to eight sites, the Total Wellness program addresses the rising medical needs of our residents. This program offers holistic care that addresses physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Over the past year alone, it has supported 417 individuals, with 65% being 51 years of age or older, providing them with vital resources to manage complex health conditions and improve their quality of life. Thanks to the dedication of our team, the Total Wellness Program has effectively supported older adults, managing complex health conditions and enhancing their overall well-being. We are proud to highlight their commitment and the positive impact this program has on the lives of older adults within our supportive housing community. Read the full article to learn more about how the Total Wellness Program is making a difference in the lives of older adults. The Urban Pathways team just landed at the National Alliance to End Homelessness Capitol Hill Day in Washington D.C.! Throughout the day, we will be meeting with members of Congress to advocate for increased funding for Homeless Assistance Grants and Tenant-Based Rental Assistance. We’re looking forward to working with our peers from around the U.S. to end homelessness and build brighter futures for our communities. #NAEH2024

“Between 2022 and 2023, avoidable emergency room visits for Urban Pathways sites with the health program dropped from 102 to 50. And now 93% of residents are receiving primary care, compared to 72% at sites without the program, according to the nonprofit.” Gothamist recently visited Urban Pathways and spoke with several staff and residents about the Total Wellness Program.
