The largest share of the Social Security Administration’s administrative budget is devoted to disability benefits because processing those claims is far more complex than processing retirement claims. So when disability claims increase even modestly, or funding for administrative expenses is tight, the impacts are quickly seen in administering the disability program. That is happening right now, and it is impacting historically high numbers of already vulnerable people. There are currently over 1.1 million people waiting for an initial disability claim decision. Wait times exceed seven months and may take years to be decided through appeals. The imperative for a national plan on aging is now more evident than ever. Through the input of older adults, organizations with expertise in aging issues, and other stakeholders from all sectors, a national plan has the potential to achieve sweeping solutions, enabling all people, as they age, to maintain good health, build financial resilience, and remain in their homes and communities.    Read the new report from AARP’s Public Policy Institute, Aging Well in America: AARP’s Vision for the National Plan on Aging, which launches a new AARP initiative designed to support national efforts now underway to advance a national plan.
