We’re thrilled to announce that we are one of five US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant recipients awarded to improve indoor air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in schools. This grant will allow us to build capacity among more school district staff, particularly in low-income, disadvantaged, and Tribal communities, making our training and resources more accessible to those who need them most. Above all, we suggest that schools consider #reusables first. Reusables eliminate many of the concerns associated with single-use, such as exposure to toxic chemicals (including PFAS and styrene), increased waste production, and some recyclability or compostability issues. Our newly updated toolkit still has best practices for K-12 schools looking to transition to non-toxic reuse, and also has several new resources. School district staff, join us on September 10 and 11th in Austin, Texas, for a free in-person School Resiliency Summit! School systems are faced with increasing challenges from responding to extreme weather events like heat, flooding, and wildfires, to infection outbreaks, and the need to provide safe and healthy learning environments for students and staff. Excited for the bipartisan bill "The Indoor Air Quality and Healthy Schools Act" introduced today by Congressmen Paul Tonko (D-NY) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). U.S. Green Building Council proud to support this proposal to advance public health by codifying the work of EPA’s Indoor Environments Division, creating a regularly updated national assessment of indoor air quality (IAQ) in schools and childcare facilities, and recognizing voluntary building certifications reflecting best practices for better indoor air.
