The collapse of the Arba'at Dam in Eastern Sudan on 25 August is a major disaster, in a country already ravaged by war. 20 villages were swept away, at least 60 people have died, scores are missing, thousands have lost everything. The dam provided around 50% of the water supply to Port Sudan, which now faces critical shortages. I visited the site with the Minister of Finance, the Humanitarian Aid Commissioner and other partners to assess the damage and plan measures to address immediate needs as well as long-term solutions. UNDP will support sustainable recovery efforts to ensure this never happens again.
