Welcome to the Office of Naval Research! You are joining a talented group of people who are passionately committed to doing their part in support of sponsoring new research and creating new capabilities for the nation’s Sailors and Marines. We look forward to having you on our team.


Onboarding Checklist

You have received a tentative offer letter with the Office of Naval Research and are wondering: What happens next? Rest assured our staffing team will help guide you through the steps and actions you will need to complete prior to reporting to work and once you begin your career at ONR. The information below outlines what to expect as part of the ONR onboarding process.

Before You Report to ONR

You will be asked to provide information that will be used to verify your eligibility for employment. This request will come from the HR system. You will submit the documentation to the staffing specialist assigned to your hiring action. The documentation requirements include:

Upon verification of eligibility, you will hear back from the staffing specialist and receive the final offer letter for your review and acceptance. You should contact your staffing specialist with any questions.

There are required forms and training that you will need to complete prior to reporting to ONR. These are needed for you to obtain your badge and gain access to the Navy network. You will receive a “Welcome” email from your assigned Action Officer with specific instructions on what needs to be completed.

Please print/save a copy of the training certificates of completion. You will need to email the completion certificates along with the completed forms to your AO for processing. You should contact your AO with any questions.

Once You Start

Schedule an appointment at the nearest DEERS/RAPIDS site to obtain your Common Access Card (CAC). To schedule an appointment, please visit: https://idco.dmdc.osd.mil/idco/locator. Two forms of identity for example, a driver's license, passport or social security card) are required at your appointment.

For access to the building, your CAC must be enrolled in the Privilege Management Program (PMP) at the Pentagon Pass Office (Room 1F1084). To make an appointment for your PMP, click here: PMP Appointment

Coordinate with the ONR Asset Manager to obtain your computer and other applicable IT hardware assets (i.e., cell phone, air card, etc.). Visit OneDesk, ONR’s Help Desk, to request assistance with initial equipment setup and instructions. Once you have both your CAC and computer, you must call the Navy Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI) help desk to request your Navy network account setup. The NMCI Help Desk can be reached at 1-866-843-6624.

Check in with security to verify WFM has all required information (ex. current PSI, valid VAR, etc.). If you have top secret security clearance, you must also check in with the Special Security Office.

Report to Headquarters Management (HQMGMT) and provide your workspace assignment number. Contact your code Administrative Officer if unknown.

Schedule an appointment with the Office of Counsel to complete your ethics orientation. Appointments are subject to the Office of Counsel’s availability and should be scheduled as soon as possible.

Discuss the Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) Program and individual training requirements with the ONR DAWIA Program Manager as necessary (depends on your career field). Obtain guidance on the following information systems: Wide Area Workflow (WAWF), Electronic Document Access (EDA), Contracting Officer Representative Tracking (CORT) tool and Contractor Performance Assessment Reporting System (CPARS).

If travel is required for your position, you will need to obtain a travel card.

To begin, complete the Statement of Understanding for the Government Travel Card Program and the Consolidated Card Program Management Division (CCPMD) Cardholder training.

Report to your government supervisor; request signature on the travel card form and/or the statement of understanding.

Report to the Travel Card Office; submit the statement of understanding, travel card form (if required) and training certificate(s).

Please note: The Travel Card Office may require your social security number to obtain a new travel card. Once a travel card is issued, the travel card information must be entered into the Defense Travel System (DTS).

New government employees can access myPay after 45 days.
