Damsel

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Damsel has an appealing action hero in Millie Bobby Brown, whose gutsy performance is often enough to balance the scales against the film's underpowered story and occasionally unconvincing effects.

Audience Says

Damsel is a decently made fantasy film and Millie Bobby Brown does well in the title role, although it's easy to tell where the story's going and the CGI isn't great.

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com I’ve admittedly watched Damsel twice, so it’s obvious that, flaws and all, the film put a big enough smile on my face that I had no problem sitting down for an almost immediate second look. Rated: 3/4 Mar 11, 2024 Full Review Nell Minow RogerEbert.com Even on the smaller screen, though, the fresh, female-led take on the traditional tale, including a bit of a sisterhood-is-powerful twist near the end, makes it worth a watch. Rated: 3/4 Mar 9, 2024 Full Review David Opie Empire Magazine Too childish and shallow for adults, yet too brutal and gory for kids, this is one Damsel that really does need saving, after all. Rated: 2/5 Mar 9, 2024 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net A handsomely produced mini-epic, with a good idea and a great cast, that is neither here nor there in execution. Rated: 2/5 Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Aaron Charles InSession Film Mia Wasikowska gives a fine performance as Penelope. Rated: A- May 9, 2024 Full Review James Marsh South China Morning Post The role of Elodie is perfectly tailored for Brown, who evolves seamlessly from prim and proper princess to resourceful action heroine. Ridwoan R Excellent movie! Millie never disappoints💖 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/01/24 Full Review REaD C Damsel was even better than I thought. A dark fantasy, survival thriller is such a cool concept to make a movie out of. It is an untraditional and engaging fantasy tale that sets itself up well. It has everything to love about fantasy while offering a new, refreshing perspective in its story. The absolute best thing about it is Millie Bobby Brown as Princess Elodie. Millie once again proves she is one the greatest young actresses of all time. She does so much with her performance as the audience are grounded with Elodie trying to survive. That was when the movie was at its best, we spend so much time there. Later on it becomes more of an action movie but it all worked. A really great movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/01/24 Full Review Sier D This is the end of your story Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/27/24 Full Review Neal C Way to boring most of the time the hole thing with the dragon took way to long and it’s overall just a nether forgettable Netflix movie Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/24 Full Review Sayan N I don’t see how someone can spend hours of their time on this movie. Fantasy is something, but the plot is kiddish at the very best. It’s really like “beast running behind me,” “oh I’m hurt” and then finally “woohoo we won!” It doesn’t get more childish than this. And the graphic effects are unnecessary and oftentimes disgusting. Don’t watch with a kid because of the violence. And my older family members found it very disturbing. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/23/24 Full Review William B I did not expect much from this film when I started watching it, and I have to say it surprised me in all the right ways. You can tell what the set-up is from the first moments of the film, but what makes this all work is what they do with the characters once we are established within the confines of that predictable trope. It is not that it completely surprises you, it is just that it is well executed. As for effects, I’m not sure why I have seen criticism of the SFX being lackluster - I think they did more than well enough for a Netflix film, and it looks great on my old plasma tv. Highly recommend. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/21/24 Full Review Read all reviews
