Higher Education Should Be Made Free For All

Higher education is one of the most valuable and useful assets of the society which is
required to propel the development of science, medicine, technology, arts and other fields.
However, not every family can afford to send their children to college or university. Hence,
higher education would become the preserve of wealthy families but the deprivation of poor
families. I agree that higher education should be made free for all. There is a strong case for
the government to provide free higher education to ensure an equal opportunity for all to
access tertiary education, allow students to choose the field of study that they like, and
improve the society in many areas in the long run.
Firstly, making higher education free ensures equality of opportunity for all. By
negating the large bill of a college or university education, more students would be able to
attend college or university. Besides, it will also increase the graduation rates as lower-
income students can focus more on their studies instead of working part-time to overcome
financial difficulties. Thus, free higher education would enable people from various financial
backgrounds to further their studies.
Secondly, if higher education is made free, students might have more freedom to
choose a major that they like. Whether it is the influence of parents or knowing that they need
to repay their loans as quickly as possible, current students are often guided towards
“practical” majors that have a more lucrative post-graduation income. If forking out large
sums of money over three to four years is no longer a factor, parents and students might feel
more relaxed about studying for majors that do not necessarily have a large paycheck
associated with them. Therefore, free college or university education encourages students to
choose the field of study that they have interest in rather than the field that will make a lot of
money.
Finally, in the long run, free education at the college and university levels improves
the overall aspects of our society. When people are more educated, they can solve problems
better. This means that the society can progress at a faster rate. Additionally, people with
education can better understand the history of their society and its current economic
conditions. As such, they may be more inclined to participate in politics and improve the
country. Also, when more people have access to higher education, the number of employable
people for high-skilled jobs increases. This means that more people will join the workforce,
which could help lessen the wealth gap between the upper, middle, and lower class.
In conclusion, an educated society propels the country to develop faster and better in
many aspects. Therefore, higher education should be made free by the government in order to
provide an equal opportunity for all to attend college or university, to enable students to
choose the field of study that they enjoy, and to improve the society in general.
