Physical Program

The Physical Program focuses on preparing cadets to meet the physically demanding requirements of an Army officer. The program develops the ability to maintain personal and unit fitness, fosters the warrior ethos, builds appreciation for teamwork, and inspires the will to win.

The Physical Program assists in the mission of developing commissioned leaders of character by providing a foundation for basic movement skills and then challenging cadets to employ what they have learned through advanced skill application. This development is accomplished through core physical education coursework, physical fitness testing, and participation in competitive sports. Every cadet engages in competitive sports throughout the academic year, whether in varsity intercollegiate athletics, intercollegiate club teams, or company athletics. The program challenges cadets every day and is both rewarding and instrumental in their development.

Intramural Sports

Every cadet company sponsors a several  different intramural sports teams.  More than a recreational release for cadets, these company athletic teams help cultivate a warrior ethos, develop grit and drive, and contribute to  a strong spirit de corps.

Competitive Sports

West Point’s competitive sports program supports the Army values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. It is designed to teach these values in an athletic setting. The nature of competitive sports provides opportunities that are difficult to replicate in the conventional classroom, in other extracurricular activities, or in military field training.

NCAA Teams

Competitive sports are a proven way to maintain fitness, and the U.S. Military Academy competes as ARMY WEST POINT in a broad range of NCAA D-1 and D-2 sports. At West Point, it’s all fun and games for ARMY fans, but every cadet on the field or court understands that competition through their sport is a critical component for developing their leadership and teamwork skills, and especially for building personal bonds.
