Fraud is the most common crime in the UK today. It’s estimated that more than 43m adults in the UK have encountered scams online and with the rapid rise of AI, we expect this will turbocharge fraud. Targeted fraud attacks against consumers are often perpetrated by organised crime groups that fund terrorism, human trafficking and drugs.

We demand that the next government tackles the scams epidemic by appointing a Fraud Minister to make fighting fraud a national priority. They must lead a clear strategy to stop organised crime online and focus on fraud as a fundamental part of the UK’s wider crime strategy. 

The next government must be prepared to take on fraudsters and criminal gangs from day one.

‘With the UK still in the grip of a fraud epidemic, new rules for victims getting their money back should end the current reimbursement lottery and lead to fairer and more consistent outcomes.’

The new reimbursement requirement will come into force in 2024.
