We've found a great cheap mattress for winter 2020
Our mattress tests reveal that you don't always have to spend a fortune to get a good night's sleep
They can have a reputation for being an expensive purchase, but a great mattress doesn't have to cost the earth. We've just tested five cheap mattresses that cost £330 or less. One of them scored highly enough to be named a Best Buy.
We've put budget mattresses from the British Bed Company, Groupon, Kayflex, Shire Beds and Snuggle Beds up against mattresses from more expensive brands such as Dreams and Simba.
One of them did well enough to be crowned a Best Buy, and at hundreds of pounds cheaper than our most expensive new Best Buy, it's certainly worth a look.
Not every cheap mattress we've tested is a bargain, though. We've found some that just aren't supportive enough or won't last over time.
For a mattress to be deemed a Best Buy in our test lab, it has to be supportive and durable, and prove that it won't sag or soften over time.

This budget-friendly, open-coil spring mattress is made from a 16.5cm spring core with layers of fibrous material on either side. Shire Beds says its 'hand-tufting' method should prevent sagging over time. We simulate 10 years of use on every mattress we test to see how durable they really are. Kayflex Pocket Plush 2000 Series, £260
The Kayflex Pocket Plush mattress combines memory foam with an 18cm micro-pocket spring core. This single-sided mattress is medium firm and, when we tested it for heat retention in our lab, we found it's of average warmth, so you shouldn't feel too cool or too hot.

Snuggle Beds Pocket Memory Ortho 1000, £328
This mattress has pressure-relieving memory foam and a pocket-spring core. Groupon Handmade Memory Hybrid, £320
Groupon is known for its bargains, but does that extend to its cheap handmade hybrid mattress. For £320, you'll get a double mattress with a 15cm spring core, topped with 0.5cm of memory foam. Groupon also claims the quilted cover is infused with aloe vera to help promote 'skin recovery'. This mattress will arrive rolled up and delivered to your door in a box - but will you need to send it back?
Is it worth paying more for an expensive double mattress?
Not necessarily. Our tests have shown that you don't have to have a big budget to get a decent mattress that will be supportive and durable.
Out of the 20 mattresses in our latest round of testing, prices ranged from £165 up to £950 and covered a wide range of mattress types - foam, pocket sprung, open coil, memory foam and hybrids. One Best Buy gave the maximum five-star spine support, while our lowest-scoring mattress in this test failed to impress, with support dropping off over time.

Will mattresses be on sale for Black Friday?
Last year, we found huge savings of more than £200 on big-brand pocket-sprung and memory foam mattresses, so you're likely to see more this November. We found some Black Friday mattress deals that offered lower prices than promotions at other times of year.
We'd always recommend you do plenty of research before making a Black Friday purchase, to make sure you're getting a genuine bargain on a product you'll love for years to come.
