Q:
Is it wagyu beef and can lettuce and tomatoes be added to the burgers?
A:
You won't even need to do any of that...it's incredible as it comes. And no x 3
Anna G.ÂQ:
If I go on a Monday with a table of 7, what time should I get there for minimal wait?
A:
My suggestion, put your name in anticipating a 1-2 hour wait, and then walk around the west Loop. Go to Levian cookies, etc..

My boyfriend loves burgers and was dying to try this place on our trip but we both didn't end up loving it as much as everyone else's rave reviews. The scrambled eggs with foie gras was probably our favorite thing because it's so buttery and creamy. It felt kind of weird to order scrambled eggs for dinner but no regrets!! We made the mistake of not splitting a burger because we definitely over ordered. The bacon was a little salty on the burger but I thought it was good. A double cheeseburger with an egg and bacon is about $30 I think which is not that expensive.
I don't think I would make it a point to come back the next time I'm in Chicago but it was a decent burger. Wait time is like 2-3 hours on the weekends which is insane and I wouldn't wait that long. We came back on a weekday and the wait time was about 1 hour. The place itself is pretty small and it's pretty dark in there. Valet parking in the front! I think I would get take out next time and eat it back at the hotel to avoid the lines.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 20, 2024
I finally got the opportunity to try Au Cheval this past weekend. If all you're going to get is the burger, then take out is absolutely the way to go. You can order on their website and it coordinates through DoorDash. The burger had a lovely brioche bun and the perfect amount of creamy goodness between the cheese and the mayo/mustard blend. It came with two burger patties and the perfect amount of pickles. This is truly the most craveable burger I have ever had!

Finally got to try Au Cheval on my recent Chicago trip, and it did not disappoint!
It gets really busy, and there is usually a wait. I would suggest going early and putting your name down, as you can walk around the area, and they'll call/text you when your table is ready. However, you have to be there within 10 minutes, or they'll give your table to the next person.
I went late on a weekend night thinking maybe the wait would've died down, but I was wrong! They told us we'll be on the wait list, but they weren't sure if we'll even get in because of how many people there were.
We tried to walk around and hold out, but eventually we gave up hope and tried to eat at a nearby restaurant. However, as we were about to get seated, we got the notice that they had a table ready for us! We ran all the way back, and thankfully made it in time!
We ordered a single cheeseburger (which is actually a double patty), and added an egg and the thick cut bacon to it.
To be honest, it was already around 10:30 PM, which is past midnight for me, and I wasn't really hungry. However, when the burger came, I couldn't stop eating it!
The flavors were perfect, the yolk was runny, the meat juicy, and it was just a really well done burger. The bacon was thick and slightly sweet, and it was so good! Definitely recommend adding it.
The burger with the add-ons was close to $30, but worth it at least once. I thought it was going to be overhyped, but we really enjoyed it.
I also tried the crispy potato hash with duck heart gravy per the server's recommendation, and it was tasty as well. It's hearty and heavy, but so much flavor! And the potato hash was so crispy!
Glad I got to try it, and I definitely recommend a visit.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - Jun 26, 2024
one of the best burgers I've ever had! I've been thinking about it for literally 2 weeks. I went on a whim on a Sunday night after a friend recommended it, was able to walk in without a reservation but waited for around 30 mins to get seated at the bar. The ambience was pretty dim inside but felt like a cozy, local vibe. The food came out quick, literally just ordered the single burger as is (no modifications) with fries, and was pleasantly surprised.
I wish they had one of these in my city!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jun 25, 2024
Visited Chicago for a weekend and my friend told me this was a must try, and I agree! Best burgers and wings (honey fried chicken) I've had in a LONG time.
Service was great and it's a cute little spot. Perfect for lunch or a dinner. It's heavy and you will be licking your fingers! I need the recipe! Thank goodness for those wet towels they provided with the wings because I'm sure that sucking on my fingers at the table got me a few stares. I'm so sad that we don't have this place in Charlotte.
Something to note... the single burger is actually TWO patties and the apparently the double burger is THREE patties so order wisely! Also, you MUST get the thick cut bacon on the burger. Totally worth it!Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jun 2, 2024
Had an awesome meal at Au Cheval! I ordered the cheeseburger with bacon added and a side of crispy fries, and it did not disappoint. The burger was juicy, perfectly cooked, and the bacon added a delicious crunch and smoky flavor. The cheese was melted just right, and the bun was fresh and held everything together nicely. The fries were golden and crispy, exactly how I like them.
While the burger was delicious, at the end of the day, a burger is still just a burger. I was hoping for something a bit more unique given all the hype. Service was friendly and quick, making for a great overall experience. Definitely recommend if you're craving a good burger and fries!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Aug 16, 2024
This is honestly one of the best burgers in town! I bring all my friends from out of town here and they love it! The bacon with the burger is a must! I have tried their bone marrow before and it was good as well. This is a restaurant that I wouldn't mind going back when my friends are in town.
The service is okay because the wait is always so long. It is also very loud so it is hard to to have a conversation. I wouldn't recommend a big group here because seating is limited.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 9101390Jun 18, 2024
We visited Au Cheval on a Saturday around noon and had a short wait of about 15 minutes, which is quite good considering the typical hour-long waits during dinner time.
Their single cheeseburgers actually come with two patties, while the double cheeseburgers come with three patties. I ordered the single cheeseburger with an egg. While it was a solid, textbook burger, I didn't find it particularly special and wouldn't wait over an hour for it again. Additionally, the bun was a bit dry for my taste.
We also tried the bone marrow, which was a great deal at $25 for four bones. It came with a beef cheek marmalade that was delicious. Adding some bone marrow and marmalade to my burger gave it a more unique flavor.
The restaurant is a bit cramped. We sat at the edge of the bar and there was constantly people restocking cups next to me.
Overall, Au Cheval offers decent food, but wasn't super memorable.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Andrew T.Orlando, FL01416Sep 9, 2024
Fries were the best thing from my experience here. Fries had a nice texture and weren't overly oily/greasy. Burger was alright but the buns were over toasted and way too crunchy which ruined the experience.
Would I come here again? Maybe, but from my experience it was just mid
Got a single, fries, and egg on the sideHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 10, 2024
Overall Thoughts: Au Cheval undeniably serves a tasty, decadent burger, but I'm not convinced it's worth the price-- our final price was nearly $40 for an egg cheeseburger and 1/2 crispy fries. My friend and I went at 3pm on a Sunday and there was a 15 minute wait, which wasn't too bad. The overall dining experience wasn't super comfortable as it quite cramped and dark, but the service was good and the food came out reasonably fast. Overall, I'd come back for a special occasion or with a group, but if I'm really craving a burger, I'd rather go to Small Cheval or somewhere else for half the price.
Food I tried:
- Single Cheeseburger with Egg (4.5/5): Definitely delicious, rich, and decadent. The egg costs extra, but is essential and really adds creaminess to the texture and richness to the patty.
- Crispy fries (4/5): These were okay and nothing special other than featuring an egg on top. The fries were pretty crispy and garlic aioli / cheesy dips were solid, but overpriced for what it is.
