    Fuel sales in June rise 5.6% from pre-Covid level

    Synopsis

    The sales were higher by 23% and 24% for petrol and diesel, respectively from a year earlier, mainly due to the demand sluggishness of last June when the country was still in the grip of the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

    India's oil consumption in June rose 5.6% from the pre-Covid level, and 18% from the low base of last year, as per official data. Compared to June 2019, sales of petrol and diesel rose 12.5% and 3% respectively, reflecting a robust recovery in demand for transportation fuels as mobility expanded in a growing economy.

    The sales were higher by 23% and 24% for petrol and diesel, respectively from a year earlier, mainly due to the demand sluggishness of last June when the country was still in the grip of the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

    Jet fuel sales rose 130% in June from a year ago but remained 9% lower than pre-Covid month of June 2019 in a sign that the aviation sector had almost returned to normalcy.

    Cooking gas consumption was 1% lower than last year while being 24.5% higher than in June 2019. Kerosene consumption continued its decline, down 67% from last year and 83% from June 2019.
