Kota’s coaching institutes have a new rival: Edtech giant Byju's test prep ambitions

Nearly 500 students stranded at coaching centres in Kota, Rajasthan during the COVID-19-induced lockdown make their way back home.

    Synopsis

Education sector analysts that ET consulted say Kota institutes have been steadily losing market share to players such as Aakash, FIITJEE and PACE. They are also facing stiff competition from smaller outfits in other states.

When edtech giant Byju’s acquired Delhi-based Aakash Educational Services in April, it sent shock waves across Kota, the hub of engineering and medical entrance coaching centres, in Rajasthan. The entry of Byju’s, a highly valued digital startup, in the test prep segment has prompted several coaching centres, with tens of thousands of students on their rolls, to redraw their business plans. The Byju’s-Aakash deal couldn’t have come at a worse
