Film-maker Mani Ratnam’s latest release ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 1’ seems to be unstoppable at the box-office. The film that boasts an ensemble cast is inching closer to making Rs 400 crore at the worldwide box-office. Also known as ‘PS-1’, the film has a stellar cast lead by Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha Krishnan, Jayam Ravi and Karthi.

Released on September 30, the film went on to shatter several box-office records. It also surpassed superstar Rajinikanth’s ‘2.0’ record in the US. Towards the 10th day since its release the film crossed over Rs 350 crore at the worldwide box-office. And, it is going strong across the country and abroad. Trade experts feel that the film will continue its dream run for another 10 days as there are no major releases slated.

Noted film trade analyst Ramesh Bala took to his Twitter account to state that Ratnam’s magnum opus was on its way to grossing Rs 400 crore worldwide. The film which has done phenomenal business is also raking in big money at the Tamil Nadu box office. ‘PS-1’ has already collected Rs 150 crore in Tamil Nadu. Earlier, Kamal Haasan’s ‘Vikram’ clocked Rs 172 crore in the state, while ‘Baahubali 2’ had a lifetime collection of Rs 155 crore in the state.
As of now, the Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial ‘Vikram’ is the highest grossing film in Tamil Nadu. However, considering the rapid growth of ‘PS-1’ film trade experts are confident that the film will overtake ‘Vikram’ and ‘Baahubali 2’ in Tamil Nadu.
‘PS-1’ is based on the historic eponymous novel by the late Kalki Krishnamurthy published in 1955. The film chronicles the early days of the Raja Raja Arulmozhi Varman, the Chola emperor. The film also stars Sobhita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lekshmi, R Parthiban, R Sarathkumar, Jayaram, and Vikram Prabhu in key roles. The second installment of the epic period action drama is expected to hit the theatres sometime in 2023.
