The Mani Ratnam directorial inflicted a crushing defeat on 'Brahmastra' and 'Vikram' in the box-office collection race.
Mani Ratnam’s dream project ‘Ponniyin Selvan: I’ has been experiencing a dream run at the box-office so far. The period drama has now overtaken two blockbusters - the Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt-starrer ‘Brahmastra Part One-Shiva’, and the Tamil action-thriller ‘Vikram’ to emerge as the third-highest grossing Indian film of the year.

The film has managed to gain fantastic overseas box-office collections. So far the Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan-starrer has minted over Rs 455 cr, according to trade reports. It has managed to gain a whopping $20 million( Rs 161 cr) just from foreign markets. Ayan Mukerji’s directorial has managed to mint about Rs 431 cr globally, while the Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi starrer (Vikram) has made Rs 443 crore worldwide.

The film set another milestone as it became the first Sandalwood movie to cross the Rs 200 cr mark in Tamil Nadu on its seventeenth day of release. Trade analyst Manobala Vijayan shared the news on his Twitter handle on Sunday, October 16. “"#PonniyinSelvan ZOOMS past ₹200 cr milestone at the TN BO today[17th Day]. First ever film in the history of Kollywood to achieve this GIGANTIC feat," read the tweet.

The historical epic is based on a literary classic of the same name. Written by Kalki Krishnamurthy, this 1955 novel remains one of the most popular historical literary works of the Indian subcontinent. The novel explores the war of succession of one of the most significant Indian ruling dynasties, the Cholas. The story gives us a glimpse of the women behind this mighty empire, their motivations and thought processes.

The film has been in the making for more than 70 years. Many veteran directors had wanted to be the one to bring Krishnamurthy's masterpiece alive on the silver screen, but all failed except Ratnam. MG Ramachandran aka MGR was the first person who tried to adapt Krishnamurthy’s magnum opus for the big screen. In 1958 he announced that he would produce ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ and the film would have an ensemble cast. But the project never took off.

At the grand teaser launch event of ‘PS:I’ Ratnam revealed that he himself had tried to make the films thrice before albeit unsuccessfully. The first attempt was in the 1980s, the second in early 2000s when the auteur teamed up with his ‘Nayakan’ hero Kamal Haasan for the project and the final time in 2010. All three attempts proved futile. However his fourth attempt proved to be successful.
