While a marriage may not always be a bed of roses, the outfit sure can. “A blend of tradition, modern flair, and personal style is key to dressing for any event,” says designer Raghavendra Rathore, who has dressed everyone from Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan to Virat Kohli and HH Sawai Padmanabh Singh. And when it comes to summer weddings, Rathore shares some of the style rules he follows that will make you fashion-forward and keep you cool.

The Guest Guide: Keep It Cool

“Opt for outfits that reflect unique styles while embracing the festive spirit. Comfort should be a priority which is where the beauty of Indian fabrics such as luxurious cottons, silk blends and indigenous varieties of khadi lend the element of “cool” for long ceremonies. While classics like bandhgalas, Achkans and waistcoat kurtas are always relevant, the summer sometimes requires a dress-down mode which doesn’t mean less but actually means less is more.”

What’s Out: Matchy-Matchy

“Overtly matching couple outfits are out. While taking elements from your better half’s outfit be it colour or a motif can add a fun vibe matching to the core isn’t. Secondly, the overuse of different surface treatments in men’s wear can destroy an otherwise good outfit and lastly donning an outfit that is not suitable to the wearer’s personality just because it’s in vogue spells fashion victim all the way.”

The Little Things: Balance Is Key

“When it comes to accessories, it's important to balance style and comfort - lightweight and minimal accessories that complement the outfit are ideal. Customised heirloom pieces are always in vogue. Handcrafted shoes that match your personal style are recommended and for formal events, closed-toe shoes are preferred.”

Colour Code: Cool For The Summer

“The versatility of a cooler colour palette be it pastel or breezy earthy tones in the summer is a huge plus point. Seamlessly transitioning from day to evening formal or casual these colours work well. If a darker colour story is desirable for the evening, then clever layering like a dark-tone waistcoat and be coupled with a lighter-tone base to add some variety to the outfit.”

Trend Talk: Be Understated

“One fashion don’t is: do not follow trends blindly. When in doubt go with the classic space. Understated elegance creates more of a statement than a passing trend.”

Rathore’s Go-To

“A Bandhgala and bespoke breeches for formal evenings and a waistcoat paired with a summer kurta in pastel hues for day wear. These attires, inspired by the heritage and legacy of the blue city, are traditional yet have a modern appeal.”
