China’s Premier Li Qiang will participate in the G20 summit in India on September 9-10 after Chinese President Xi Jinping decided to skip the upcoming meet.

"Chinese President Xi Jinping will not to attend G20 Summit; Premier Li Qiang to head delegation," confirmed China's foreign ministry.

The Chinese Foreign ministry also said, "China looks forward to the G20 New Delhi Summit reaching a consensus on tackling challenges in the economy and development, conveying confidence to the outside world and promoting shared prosperity and growth," reported Global Times, the state run paper of China.

Li is likely to travel to India after attending the East Asia summit in Jakarta. In 2021, Chinese President Xi did not travel to Italy to participate in the G20 summit due to China's COVIND-19 restrictions.

President Xi is also skipping the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and East Asia summits in Jakarta next week.

Earlier today, US president Joe Biden voiced disappointment over his Chinese counterpart’s absence from the event.

Asked specifically about Xi reportedly not planning to join the gathering in New Delhi, Biden told reporters, "I am disappointed, but I am going to get to see him", without elaborating.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has already conveyed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi his decision not to attend the Summit in-person as he has to focus on the "special military operation" in Ukraine.

Li became the eighth premier of China in March 2023, having been elevated to the second-ranking member on the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee Politburo Standing Committee in October 2022.

In its capacity as the current president of G20, India is hosting the annual summit of the influential grouping in New Delhi on September 9 and 10.

The G20 member countries represent around 85 per cent of the global GDP, over 75 per cent of the global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population.

The grouping comprises Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the US and the European Union (EU).
