Rats wreak havoc: Record surge in vehicle breakdowns caused by animals in 2023
Vehicle breakdowns caused by animals making their way into the vehicles have increased to a considerable extent and the primary troublemakers are the rats.

As per RAC, in the initial 11 months of the year 2023, the firm was informed about 303 vehicle damage incidents caused by animals. Moreover, this has been the year with a record-breaking number of such incidents

Also, it is a huge jump of 55% from 196 incidents that were reported in the year 2018 between January and November. These figures do not include those instances when a vehicle hit an animal.

Which animals caused more of such incidents?

It has been reported that rats caused over half of such animal damage incidents. Rats are found to chew off fuel hoses, invade engine bays, and also splinter headlights. Foxes are also found to bite away speed sensor wiring, brake hoses, and windscreen wiper blades.

Nick Isaac, patrol at RAC, working in southwest England, found a squirrel who was using the air filter of a car to store nuts.

A warning is given to the drivers about rodents being attracted to vehicles that have food inside them or outside. Also, it includes food that is kept unutilized for prolonged periods inside cars.

For instance, it was discovered by a patrol that a nest in a Porsche below a panel was made by 10 mice.

When do animal damage incidents most occur?

Incidents of animal damage happen more during the time of winter when animals seek shelter inside vehicles.

How to reduce the risk of animal damage?

To reduce the risks of animal damage, it is advisable to check one’s car if it is not driven for one week or more and to ensure no human or pet food is left behind inside the car.

It should also be checked if there are strange smells in the car and be careful about the disappearance of dashboard warning lights within a few minutes.

It is better to take precautions before such damage happens, rather than depending on car insurance.
