Israel-Hamas War Highlights News Updates: The Israeli army ordered a mass evacuation of Palestinians from much of Khan Younis on Monday, a sign that troops are likely to launch a new ground assault in the Gaza Strip's second largest city.
The order suggested Khan Younis will be the latest of Israel's repeated raids into parts of Gaza it has already invaded over the past eight months, pursuing Hamas militants as they regroup. Much of Khan Younis was already destroyed in a long assault earlier this year, but large numbers of Palestinians have since moved back in to escape another Israeli offensive in Gaza's southern-most city, Rafah.
The evacuation call covered the entire eastern half of Khan Younis and surrounding areas. Last week, the military ordered a similar evacuation from the north Gaza district of Shujaiya, where there has been intensive fighting since.
The order came as Israel released the director of Gaza’s main hospital after holding him for seven months without charge or trial over allegations the facility had been used as a Hamas command center. He said he and other detainees were held under harsh conditions and tortured.
The decision to release Mohammed Abu Selmia raised questions over Israel’s claims surrounding Shifa Hospital, which Israeli forces have raided twice since the start of the nearly nine-month war with Hamas. Abu Selmia and other Palestinian health officials have denied the accusations.
His release triggered an uproar across Israel’s political spectrum. Government ministers and opposition leaders expressed outrage and insisted Abu Salmia played a role in Hamas’ alleged use of the hospital — though Israeli security services rarely unilaterally free prisoners if they have a suspicion of militant links.
The decision appeared to have been taken to free up space in overcrowded detention centers. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered an inquiry, his office said, though it added that security officials independently determine whom to release “based on their professional considerations.”
Abu Selmia was released back into Gaza along with 54 other Palestinian detainees, many of whom also alleged abuse. The allegations could not be independently confirmed but matched other accounts of Palestinians who have been held in Israeli custody.
“Our detainees have been subjected to all kinds of torture behind bars,” Abu Selmia said at a news conference after his release. “There was almost daily torture.” He said guards broke his finger and caused his head to bleed during beatings, in which they used batons and dogs.
He said the medical staff at different facilities where he was held had also taken part in the abuse “in violation of all laws.” He said some detainees had limbs amputated because of poor medical care.
There was no immediate response from the prison service, which has previously denied similar accusations.
Israeli forces raided Shifa Hospital in November, alleging that Hamas had created an elaborate command and control center inside the facility. Abu Selmia and other staff denied the allegations and accused Israel of recklessly endangering thousands of patients and displaced people who were sheltering there.
The military uncovered a tunnel beneath Shifa Hospital leading to a few rooms, as well as other evidence that militants had been present inside the medical center, but the evidence fell short of what it had claimed before the raid.
Abu Selmia was detained on Nov. 22 while escorting a U.N.-led evacuation of patients from the hospital. He said his detention was “politically motivated,” adding that he had been brought to court at least three times but was never charged or allowed to meet with lawyers.
Israel has since raided other Gaza hospitals on similar allegations, forcing them to shut down or dramatically reduce services even as tens of thousands have been wounded in Israeli strikes or sickened in the harsh conditions of the war. The army raided Shifa a second time earlier this year, causing heavy destruction after saying that militants had regrouped there.
Hospitals can lose their protection under international law if combatants use them for military purposes, but any assaults on them must still be proportional to any military threat.
Amid the uproar over Abu Selmia’s release, the various Israeli state organs responsible for detentions scrambled to shift blame.
Itamar Ben Gvir, Israel’s far-right national security minister who controls the country’s police and prison service, said the releases constituted “security negligence” and blamed the Defense Ministry. Opposition leader Yair Lapid said Abu Selmia’s release was another sign of the government’s “lawlessness and dysfunction.”
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s office said the incarceration and release of prisoners is the responsibility of the prison service and the Shin Bet internal security agency. The prison service said the decision was made by the Shin Bet and the army, and released a document ordering his release that was signed by an army reserve general.
The Shin Bet said Abu Selmia had passed a risk assessment, “compared to other detainees.” It said the government had decided against its advice to release detainees determined to be less of a threat in order to free up space.
Since the start of the war, Israeli forces have detained thousands of Palestinians from Gaza and the occupied West Bank, crowding military detention facilities and prisons. Many are being held without charge or trial in what is known as administrative detention.
Israel launched its offensive after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, in which Palestinian militants killed some 1,200 civilians and took another 250 hostage. In its campaign, Israel has killed at least 37,900 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not say how many were civilians or fighters.
Most of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million have fled their homes, with many displaced multiple times. Israeli restrictions, ongoing fighting and the breakdown of public order have hindered the delivery of humanitarian aid, fueling widespread hunger and sparking fears of famine.

2.1% of Rs 2000 banknotes still to be returned
About 2.1 per cent or Rs 7,581 crore of the withdrawn Rs 2,000 banknotes have not yet been returned to the RBI, about nine months after the deadline to deposit or exchange them at bank branches was over.
This essentially means 97.87 per cent of the total value of the high-value Rs 2,000 banknotes are back in the banking system by the end of June 2024, the Reserve Bank of India said in a statement on Monday.
The total value of Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation was Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023, the date on which RBI decided to withdraw the banknote.
This essentially means 97.87 per cent of the total value of the high-value Rs 2,000 banknotes are back in the banking system by the end of June 2024, the Reserve Bank of India said in a statement on Monday.

Hoardings on Railway authority’s land are put up without permission from BMC. On 15th May 2024, a notice was given to Railways to conduct a structural audit of these hoardings and dilapidated hoardings were to be taken down. Railways is fully responsible for all unauthorised hoardings on their land and any mishaps occurring due to those during monsoon. In Ghatkopar incident, 17 persons lost their lives and 81 were injured and a total of 77 vehicles were damaged. 4 persons were arrested in the case."

Oil marketing companies reduce prices of LPG commercial cylinders by Rs 30
In a move aimed at offering relief to businesses and commercial enterprises, oil marketing companies have announced a reduction in the prices of commercial LPG gas cylinders, effective Monday. The price of the commercial LPG cylinder of 19 Kg has been slashed by Rs 30. Consequently, the new retail sales price of a 19 Kg commercial LPG cylinder in Delhi is now Rs 1646. This latest price cut follows a series of reductions over the past few months. On June 1st, the rate of 19 kg commercial LPG cylinders was reduced by Rs 69.50 in Delhi, bringing the retail sales price down to Rs 1676. Prior to that, on May 1, 2024, there was a reduction of Rs 19 per cylinder. These consecutive price decreases indicate a positive trend for businesses struggling with operating costs amid economic challenges.

Delhiites woke up to a humid Monday morning with the minimum temperature settling at 28.4 degrees Celsius, 0.5 notches above the season's average. There was no rainfall recorded in the last 24 hours even as the weather department has forecast a cloudy sky with possibility of heavy rains for the day. The maximum temperature is expected to settle at 33 degrees Celsius. On Friday, Delhi recorded 228 mm of rainfall that brought the city to a standstill. With the three new criminal laws coming into effect, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Monday slammed the government and said it was another case of "bulldozing" existing laws and replacing them with three new bills without adequate discussion and debate. The former home minister said that in the long term, further changes must be made to the three laws to bring them in conformity with the Constitution and the modern principles of criminal jurisprudence. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam replaced the British-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively. In a post on X, Chidambaram said, "90-99 per cent of the so-called new laws are a cut, copy and paste job. A task that could have been completed with a few amendments to the existing three laws has been turned into a wasteful exercise." "Yes, there are a few improvements in the new laws and we have welcomed them. They could have been introduced as amendments. On the other hand, there are several retrograde provisions. Some changes are prima facie unconstitutional," he said.

India received 11% less rainfall than normal in June as all regions except the south received below-average rains after the monsoon lost momentum in mid-June, weather department data showed on Monday. The central, north-western and north-eastern regions received 14%, 33%, and 13% below average rainfall, respectively, in June, data compiled by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) showed. The southern region received 14% above average rainfall, it showed.

Singapore LoP re-elected Sec-Gen of Workers' Party
Singapore's Leader of Opposition (LoP), Indian-origin Pritam Singh, was re-elected secretary-general of the Workers' Party (WP) on Sunday. A total of 14 members, led by re-elected chairwoman Sylvia Lim, were voted into the Central Executive Committee (CEC), which is WP's top decision-making body. Singh, 48, was returned unopposed. He has been WP's secretary-general since 2018. "Fantastic result. We're looking forward to working with this CEC for the next two years," Singh told reporters when leaving. "This wasn't about candidature, this was an internal party election, so my comments will be restricted to that," Channel News Asia quoted Singh as saying.

Haridwar: SDRF pulls out 4 submerged vehicles from River Ganga
In a relief and rescue operation, a team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) pulled out the four submerged vehicles from the Ganga river after they were swept away in the flooding of rain drain near Kharkhari in Haridwar on Sunday. These vehicles have been handed over to the district police. These vehicles were swept away in the Ganga River when the rain drain suddenly overflowed near the Kharkhari area after Haridwar was lashed with heavy rains on Saturday.

Drone footage from Ukraine’s military released Sunday has shown what appears to be bodies in a civilian area in the embattled eastern town of Toretsk, which has come under heavy Russian bombardment in recent days. Local officials said that powerful Russian glide bombs have also been used in the town, the latest eastern front flash point as Russian attacks continue to put stretched Ukrainian front-line units on the defensive. IMD issues red alert for Northeast India, predicts heavy rainfall over next 2 days
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several northeastern states due to expected heavy rainfall over the next two days. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim are under alert. IMD scientist Naresh Kumar confirmed that the monsoon is in an active phase, bringing significant precipitation. Light to moderate rainfall is also observed in central and northwest India. The monsoon is expected to advance further in the coming days. Additionally, thunderstorms are predicted for the National Capital Region on Sunday afternoon.
