Bengaluru: Vidyaranyapura, a residential colony in northwest Bengaluru formed in the 1970s and named after saint Vidyaranya, faces a garbage issue, say its residents. The area, which is close to the University of Agricultural Sciences, National Centre for Biological Sciences and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, also faces badly maintained lakes, broken footpaths and clogged drains. “Garbage is the biggest issue in the ward. In BEL Layout, there is a huge mound of garbage in the BBMP playground. The stench is unbearable and kids play right there. Due to the garbage, there have been many cases of dengue,“ said Praveen M, an employee of Tech Trust.

If garbage is one reason for the rise of dengue, the other is badly maintained lakes. “There is a lake behind the Ganesh temple, which has not been maintained well. It is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. A majority of dengue cases in MS Ramaiah Hospital are from Vidyaranyapura,“ said Sathish Nair, an employee of Microland. “The storm water drains, which carry sewage, is directed to the Narasipura Lake and pollutes it,“ Praveen said.

Apart from the usual civic issues, the residents also complain of `on request bus stops that cause traffic jams. “There is no designated bus stop in front of the Durga temple arch on Vidyaranyapura main road but the buses still stop be cause they find a lot of people waving their hands. This causes huge traffic jams every ten minutes,“ said Manjesh JC from Namma Vidyaranyapura, a resident welfare association.
