MELBOURNE, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Latest news from day seven of the Australian Open tennis championships on Sunday (all times GMT):

0325 VENUS OVERCOMES GLARE, BARTHEL TO MAKE LAST EIGHT

Evergreen American Venus Williams struggles on serve with the sun in her eyes but she fights through it to record a 6-3 7-5 victory over a stubborn Mona Barthel on Rod Laver Arena, advancing to the Melbourne Park quarters for the ninth time.

The 36-year-old seven-times grand slam winner had major issues with her ball toss from the northern end of the main showcourt but managed to seize her opportunities from the opposite end and sealed the win in 96 minutes.

0135 PAVLYUCHENKOVA 'SHOCKED' AT QUARTER-FINAL PLACE

"I'm kind of shocked a little, but also so happy," says the Russian 24th seed, who has beaten three compatriots and a Ukrainian at Melbourne Park this week. "I think we were both a bit nervous but we played last week in Sydney and I won.

"I've been practising hard, working hard and enjoying it."
