Synopsis

According to Prabodha Acharya, if ‘green’ steel means it will be produced without carbon, that is not possible. Besides, there is no standard definition of ‘green’ steel in the world. Economic growth profiles vary, as do production processes. Therefore, standards for ‘green’ steel will have to be defined regionally by the respective governments.

There isn’t a way of producing steel, without releasing carbon, says Prabodha Acharya, chief sustainability officer, JSW Group. Which is why he considers the term ‘green steel’, which means low-carbon steel, a misnomer.
