Why ‘Pay Phone Numbers’ aren’t as bright an idea as pay phones.

The smart folks at the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) have reportedly suggested charging for telephone numbers because these identifiers are a finite resource. This may seem difficult to fathom – especially when we have moved so far on from the penny-pinching 1980s - because the moment you add an extra digit in a telephone number, ten times as many people can join the network.
