Synopsis

After keeping its food-delivery business on the slow burner for a couple of years, Amazon now wants to take on the giants in the game. Armed with the lessons from its pilot in Bengaluru, the e-commerce company is planning expansion to big Indian metros starting with Pune.

Amazon has not seen much success with food delivery globally. But that has not deterred the American behemoth from testing the business in India and going head-to-head with giants Swiggy and Zomato. For restaurants, Amazon Food’s entry into the food-delivery business in the summer of 2020 was a welcome move as it aimed to break the Swiggy-Zomato duopoly. It charged far lower restaurant commissions of 10%-15% as against Swiggy and Zomato’s
