    Supreme Court notice to Centre, RBI on plea seeking alternate digital KYC process for acid attack survivors

    The Supreme Court has requested responses from the Centre on a plea for an alternative digital KYC process for acid attack survivors and persons with permanent eye damage. Acid attack activist Pragya Prasun and others filed the plea citing challenges faced due to current KYC requirements hindering access to essential services for survivors with eye disfigurement.

    Acid attacks increase by 69% in England and Wales with more women than men victims

    According to Acid Survivors Trust International (ASTI), 710 acid attacks were recorded in England and Wales last year, compared to 421 in 2021.The total economic cost of all the attacks in 2022 was more than GBP 44 million.

    The high court said in cases of non-compliance of the rules or unlawful sale of acid, the authorities must take swift and decisive action against the offenders.     Consumer interest watchdog CCPA issues notices to Flipkart, Meesho for sale of acid on their platforms

    The CCPA, the watchdog of consumer interest in India, has come across the sale of highly corrosive acids on these e-commerce platforms. It has questioned the easy and unregulated availability of such acids on these e-platforms. Availability of hazardous acids in such accessible manner can be dangerous and unsafe for consumers and to the public at large, it said.
