    Sweden gives radar surveillance planes to Ukraine air force

    Sweden will donate two Saab Airborne Surveillance and Control (ASC) 890 aircraft to Ukraine to enhance its defenses against Russia, as part of a $1.3 billion aid package. These aircraft will improve long-range target identification and support the integration of F-16 fighter jets donated by other Western countries. This contribution is part of Sweden's larger military support plan, pledging $7.1 billion over three years. Sweden will expedite orders for S 106 Global Eye aircraft to replace the donated planes, according to Defence Minister Pal Jonson.

    Russian forces threatened to shoot down a French surveillance aircraft over the Black Sea, highlighting Moscow's aggressive stance amid its Ukraine invasion. The incident, unprecedented for French pilots in the region, occurred in mid-November in international airspace. French defense minister Sebastien Lecornu described it as a return to Soviet-era aggressiveness, contrasting with Russia's behavior before the Ukraine invasion. French AWACS flights in the area aim to defuse tensions if intercepted by Russian planes, but encounters are rare.

    India is making significant progress in developing and deploying advanced indigenous airborne early-warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) are actively working on the development of six Mark-1A and six Mark-2 versions of the Netra AEW&C aircraft. These aircraft will enhance surveillance and detection capabilities along the borders with China and Pakistan, as well as provide guidance to friendly fighters during air combat.

    The proposals for the acquisition of these 15 aircraft are at an advanced stage in the defence ministry, in which nine planes would be procured by the Navy while six would be taken by the Indian Coast Guard.

    The decision to go for an indigenous ISTAR comes after the air force cleared the acquisition of more indigenous 'Netra' early warning and control aircraft to its fleet. As reported, six additional aircraft are planned to be acquired by the air force as part of a $1 billion plan to add force multipliers in the air force.
