    The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has conducted a probe into one of its senior officers, Pawan Khatri, who allegedly showed "undue interest" in the Delhi excise liquor policy scandal. Khatri, along with six others, was booked by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for demanding a bribe from businessman Amandeep Dhall, accused in the Delhi excise policy scandal, to evade arrest from the ED.

    'Stop TB' sets ball rolling for Bedaquiline's generic clone

    Stop TB Partnership has invited tenders for the production of bedaquiline, the first new therapy to be made available for tuberculosis (TB) in 40 years. The drugs will be supplied via generic production to lower and middle income countries, including those where patents are still in effect. The move is designed to reduce the price and improve access to the key TB medication.

    Decision on mandatory PhD for asst professors reversed; UGC decides on NET to be minimum criteria

    The University Grants Commission (UGC) has reversed its previous decision on mandatory PhD qualifications for assistant professors, making it optional once again. The minimum criteria for recruitment will now be the NET, SET and SLET. In 2021, the UGC extended the date of applicability of PhD to July 2023 for recruitment of assistant professors, due to Covid-related issues that slowed the progress of research work.

    Key patent application by J&J for TB drug rejected

    The company had filed a patent for Fumarate salt of bedaquiline in 2008 to extend its patent till the end of 2027. It was under review by the patent office. The strategy is called patent evergreening used by companies to keep the prices high as it would keep the affordably priced generic versions of the drug out of the market.
