Rescuers now begin vertical drilling at Silkyara tunnel
Following the auger machine setback, the Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited on Sunday started vertical drilling. The rescuers have to drill down nearly 84 m from the top, with 15 m already drilled. SJVNL is hopeful of completing this task in the next few days if they do not encounter any hurdle.

Silkyara Tunnel Crash: Auger machine fails again; experts stop providing rescue deadline
Vertical drilling may start in the "next 24 to 36 hours" as machines are being placed on a platform on top of the tunnel, he said. About 86 meters of vertical drilling is needed to reach the crust of the tunnel, and thereafter it will be broken to reach the trapped workers, he explained.

On Thursday, efforts to drill through the debris of the collapsed Silkyara tunnel were once again halted as the platform supporting the equipment developed cracks, adding another setback to the mission to rescue the 41 trapped workers.

"By any means", the trapped workers will be rescued as all resources are being used, said NDMA member Lt Gen (retd) Syed Ata Hasnain while briefing media on rescue operations. There has been no progress in the movement of pipe through debris in the tunnel since Thursday, and about 15 metres of drilling is still left to reach the stranded workers, he added.

The trouble for the agencies involved in the rescue operation began in the afternoon on Wednesday after the start of drilling exercise. The machine encountered a metallic object (lattice girder rib) in the front of the pipe, and it created problems in further pushing of the pipe.
