Export duty on parboiled rice extended upto March 31, 2024
The Indian government has extended the export duty on parboiled rice until March 31 next year. This move aims to maintain sufficient local stock and control domestic prices. The restrictions apply to all varieties of non-basmati rice, which make up about 25% of the country's total rice exports. Earlier, the government also banned the export of non-basmati white rice to boost domestic supply and control retail prices during the festive season.

According to a survey by the Retailers Association of India (RAI), retail sales in August 2023 grew by 9% compared to the same period last year. Apparel sales rose by 8%. QSR and jewellery saw growth of 14% each, while food & grocery grew by 13%. Retailers are expecting double-digit growth in the upcoming months due to the festive season. South India experienced the highest growth at 15%, potentially due to Muhurtham Days, weddings, and the Onam festival. QSR and jewellery reported the highest growth in categories at 14%.
Retail inflation for farm, rural workers eases marginally in August
Retail inflation for farm workers and rural labourers in India slightly decreased in August compared to the previous month. The consumer price index for agricultural labourers (CPI-AL) stood at 7.37% in August 2023, down from 7.43% in July 2023. Similarly, the consumer price index for rural labourers (CPI-RL) was 7.12% in August, compared to 7.26% in July.
