    India's Altmin in talks with Australia for lithium supplies

    Indian battery materials producer Altmin is in discussions with the Australian government to secure lithium supplies as part of its expansion strategy to meet growing demand for the critical mineral. Altmin currently sources lithium carbonate from Brazil and Bolivia and aims to establish lithium refineries in Brazil and Australia. The company plans to set up a cathode active materials plant in India by 2025 and is raising funds for its expansion efforts.

    India is engaging in discussions with various countries to seek technical assistance for lithium processing, aiming to bolster its emerging lithium mining and electric vehicle industries and reduce dependence on China. The Ministry of Mines initiated talks with Australia and the US last year, along with private companies reaching out to Bolivia, Britain, Japan, and South Korea

    India to explore lithium in Argentina

    An official statement this is the first ever lithium exploration and mining project by an Indian government company. KABIL will start exploration and development of 5 lithium brine blocks in Argentina. The project cost is about 200 crores.

    "The project will help India strengthen lithium supplies, while developing lithium mining and downstream sectors of both the countries," mines minister Pralhad Joshi said in a post on X. India, among the world's top greenhouse gas emitters, has been pursuing overseas pacts to secure key minerals in resource-rich countries such as Australia, Argentina and Chile.

    KPIT Technologies launches sodium-ion battery technology

    KPIT Technologies introduced Sodium (Na)-battery tech, aiming for a 25-30% cost reduction compared to lithium-ion batteries, critical in EVs. Promising 80% capacity retention for 3000-6000 cycles and faster charging, it targets diverse applications from vehicles to grid storage. The firm, collaborating with IISER Pune, harnesses earth-abundant materials, aiming to lessen India's battery import reliance. Seeking partnerships for mass production, KPIT's sodium-ion tech aligns with global sustainability efforts amidst rising interest in alternative battery solutions.
