    41 Silkyara tunnel workers may see the light of day in 72 hours

    The Indian government is aiming to rescue all 41 workers trapped in the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi within two and a half days as horizontal drilling resumes. The government is working on five rescue options, with vertical drilling being the second best option in case horizontal drilling is halted due to obstructions.

    The drilling work to reach 40 trapped workers inside the Silkyara tunnel has been halted after rescuers bored 25 meters into the rubble. The workers have been trapped for six days, counting Saturday, after a portion of the tunnel caved in on November 12. An additional heavy-duty drilling machine is expected to reach the tunnel site later on Saturday.

    NHIDCL, the firm building the tunnel, in a report released to media Monday afternoon said that while removal of loose muck continues along with shotcreting (concrete spraying) inside the tunnel, the strategy is to push inside a steel pipe of 900 mm diameter with the help of a hydraulic jack to evacuate the trapped workers.
