The Jammu and Kashmir police said one militant was involved in the incident and a proxy militant outfit, Kashmir Freedom Fighters has claimed responsibility of the attack. The gunmen opened fire at Bhat at his residence in Choudhry Gundh area of Shopian. He was immediately shifted to hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

In June 2022, a bank manager, identified as Vijay Kumar, was shot dead outside his office by terrorists in the Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir. Before that, on May 31, Rajni Bala, a female Hindu teacher, was shot dead by terrorists in Kashmir's Kulgam district.

"Terrorists fired upon civilians in an apple orchard in Chotipora area of Shopian. One person died and one injured. Both belong to minority community. Injured person has been shifted to hospital. Area cordoned off. Further details shall follow," PTI quoted a police spokesperson as saying.

In the second encounter in Pulwama, a militant apparently involved in a recent civilian killing was gunned down. Police identified him as Shahid Bashir Sheikh, a resident of Srinagar. They said an AK-47, along with ammunition, was found from the site of the encounter.
