Indian smartphone market grows 8-10 per cent in March quarter
India's smartphone market showed growth in 2024, led by Samsung and Apple. The premium segment saw significant expansion, driven by the iPhone 15 series. 5G adoption and post-COVID upgrades are expected to drive further growth.
iPads face stiff competition from Android tablets in March quarter
Following technological advancements such as 5G support, high-resolution display, stylus support and more, shipments of Android tablets in the consumer segment surged in the March quarter, which also saw easing of inventory bottlenecks. In contrast, iPad shipment growth remained nearly flat during the quarter at a time when the consumer segment grew 10% from a year earlier, according to IDC India.
'Smartphone shipments to stay flat in 2023 despite festive uptake'
Counterpoint Research expects a 2% year-on-year decline to 149 million units and the fourth quarter to register shipment growth after a flat third quarter. After Diwali, the research firm estimates the rest of the fourth quarter to remain slow, with brands expected to enter the next year with a clean slate. IDC India, however, has revised its forecast downwards to 140-143 million units for the full year 2023, from 144-145 million units estimated earlier.

5G smartphone shipments in India surge by 74 pc in 2022: CMR
The overall mobile market in India declined 17 per cent YoY in 2022. The shipments in the affordable segment, sub-Rs 7,000 apiece, declined by 55 per cent on YoY basis due to supply constraints as well as challenging economic conditions.

Smartphone sales grew 29% in 2015, fell 5% in 2016 owing to demonetisation, then recovered to 14% in 2017 and 2018, as per IDC India. But in 2019, it grew at 8% and is expected to end 2020 flat year-on-year because of the economic impact of Covid-19 pandemic.

Amongst early adopters of 5G smartphones in India and tech intenders, Chinese brand Oppo scored the highest (81%), followed by Samsung (79%), the report said. The study reveals that, across China and Western Europe, some of the early benefits that early 5G users are seeing include better quality video calls (66%), faster downloads (59%), and ability to stream UHD videos (55%).
