      UGC drops cap on contractual faculty for autonomous colleges

      The University Grants Commission (UGC) in India has introduced revised guidelines under the UGC (Conferment of Autonomous Status upon Colleges and Measures for Maintenance of Standards in Autonomous Colleges) Regulations, 2023. The changes mean that autonomous colleges will no longer have to ensure that contractual faculty members do not exceed 10% of total sanctioned faculty positions. Affiliated and constituent colleges will also be able to directly approach the UGC for academic and administrative autonomy without going through the parent university. The autonomous status allows colleges to design their syllabi and restructure courses, along with offering degree and PhD courses with approval from the academic council, and for a period of ten years.
