    The inaugural 'Desert Cyclone' joint military exercise between India and the UAE kicked off in Rajasthan, focusing on enhancing interoperability in sub-conventional operations within desert terrains. With troops from the Zayed First Brigade (UAE) and India's Mechanised Infantry Regiment, the exercise, running until January 15, concentrates on strategies like Joint Surveillance, Cordon and Search, Built-Up Area Domination, and Heliborne Operations. It aims to bolster cooperation for peacekeeping operations, promoting partnership, and sharing best practices, reinforcing the bond between the two nations.

    The Indian Army has been called in at Uttarkashi's Silkyara tunnel for manual drilling at the site where 41 workers have remained trapped for the past 15 days.

    Rescuers have also started to create a vertical channel with a newly replaced drilling machine, officials said. They drilled horizontally for a week but the mountainous terrain proved too much for the machine, which broke down repeatedly before it was damaged irreparably on Friday, officials said.

    Earlier today, a delegation led by Principal Secretary to Prime Minister, Pramod Kumar Mishra took stock of ongoing efforts to rescue 41 trapped workers in the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi on the 16th day of the operations. Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Uttarakhand Chief Secretary SS Sandhu along with Pramod Kumar Mishra inspected the work inside the tunnel.The Principal Secretary also enquired about the food items sent to the workers trapped inside the tunnel. PK Mishra also spoke to the trapped workers and their families.

    National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) Managing Director Mahmood Ahmad announced that the vertical drilling at the Uttarkashi tunnel, where 41 workers remain trapped, will be completed by November 30. The current machine can drill 40-45 meters, and two more machines have been brought.
