    Jammu, the winter capital of the Union territory, has been colder than Srinagar for the past nearly one week. The city of temples recorded a low of 2.5 degrees Celsius Saturday night which was 4.5 degrees below normal, officials said.

    Kashmir has seen a slight improvement in minimum temperatures during the 'Chilla-i-Kalan', the region's harshest winter period. Srinagar recorded a low of minus 3.3 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam in Anantnag district recorded a low of minus 4.8 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg, the ski resort in Baramulla district, was the warmest place in the valley. The cold conditions have led to freezing of water bodies and water supply lines, forcing residents to wear extra layers of clothing.
