    Man arrested in Rs 10,000 cr GST fraud case after nine months on the run

    A 31-year-old man, Babar Khan, evading police for nine months, was arrested in connection with a Rs 10,000-crore GST fraud across India. Khan allegedly set up fake firms using stolen or forged ID cards to fraudulently claim input tax credit. Noida police initially busted the gang last year, which operated by registering thousands of companies under false identities to generate e-way bills and claim government benefits.

    GST Council Meeting: Railway Platform tickets exempted from GST, biometric authentication push & other key decisions

    At its 53rd meeting in New Delhi, the GST Council decided to implement nationwide biometric authentication to combat fake invoicing. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced retrospective amendments to input tax credit timelines under the CGST Act from July 2017. The meeting, the first since the new government took office, also addressed various operational issues and recommended uniform GST rates for milk cans and carton boxes.

      The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) proposed several reforms to enhance India's Goods and Services Tax (GST) system on its 7th anniversary. Recommendations include raising the GST exemption limit to Rs 1.5 crore for firms (up from Rs 40 lakh), simplifying the tax structure by reducing slabs and eliminating state-wise registration requirements. GTRI highlighted GST's role as the world's largest indirect tax platform, with over 1.46 crore registrations.

      A Deloitte survey shows growing confidence in India's GST among C-suite executives, with 84% perceiving it positively in 2024, up from 72% in 2023.       GSTN rolls out special procedure for tobacco manufacturers to register machines with tax authorities

      The GST Network (GSTN) has introduced an online facility for manufacturers of pan masala, gutkha, and similar tobacco products to register their machines with tax authorities. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) announced the new registration and monthly return filing procedure to improve GST compliance. The online facility allows manufacturers to submit machine-related information through Form GST SRM-I, and Form GST SRM-II (for return filing) will be available soon.

Since the launch of GST on July 1, 2017, tax officers have detected fake ITC of Rs 1.42 lakh crore and recovered Rs 13,000 crore. As many as 1,350 people have been arrested for defrauding the exchequer.

      Interim Budget 2024: Cos need to register for Input Service Distribution

      Companies with branches in multiple cities will now need to register for input service distribution (ISD) to claim input tax credit for services provided by the head office to the branch office. The interim budget proposed to make this rule mandatory, besides the requirement of a separate registration that allows headquarters of companies to distribute their input tax credit with their branch offices.

      Companies to submit bank details to GST officers within 30 days of registration to avoid suspension, says GSTN

      "Taxpayers are therefore advised to promptly furnish their bank account details, who have not provided it so far if 30 days period is shortly going to expire to avoid disruption in business activities and the subsequent suspension of GSTIN," it said. GSTN further said that a new functionality is being developed as per which taxpayers whose registration is suspended for non-submission of bank account details would be intimated through Form REG-31.
