Zelensky urges Western air defence as Russian attacks kill 11

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged the West to provide more air-defence systems urgently as Russian attacks using missiles, drones, and artillery have resulted in at least 11 deaths. The attacks included a drone strike in Odesa that killed eight people, including a child and a baby, and shelling in Kharkiv, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia that killed three. Zelensky emphasized the need for stronger air defences to protect civilians from Russian attacks. Russia's recent advances have put Ukraine in a difficult position, exacerbated by delays in Western aid delivery.

Deadly Russian strikes pound Ukraine cities

Russia missiles at Ukraine's two main cities killed four people and injured dozens while 250,000 consumers in the capital region were left without power in near-freezing temperatures. Ukraine's interior minister Igor Klymenko said two people were killed in the Kyiv region. The attacks came after Russia on December 29 launched a wave of strikes across Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, which killed 39 people.

Ukrainian army says advancing at Dnipro river as drones target Kyiv

Ukrainian drone attacks on Moscow were particularly frequent in the spring, ahead of the launch of its counteroffensive in June, but they have been rare in recent weeks. Kyiv was also targeted for a second night by a barrage of Iranian-made Shahed drones packed with explosives that were launched by Russian forces, local authorities said.

Ukraine reports 'massive' Russian drone attack

Russia launched 40 drones overnight in a "massive" attack on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure but over half of them were downed, officials said on Friday. Russia's defence ministry said overnight it shot down two Ukrainian drones over its Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine.

Russian strike kills 51 gathered for wake in east Ukraine

A Russian strike in northeastern Ukraine killed at least 51 people gathered for a wake, sparking outrage from Western leaders and prompting the UN to warn of a potential war crime. The attack took place in the village of Groza, and the victims included mourners for a fallen Ukrainian soldier as well as individuals in a shop in the same building. This was the deadliest attack since Russia's invasion in 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the strike was deliberate, and he secured agreements from several countries to provide Kyiv with more air defense systems and artillery.

    • UN condemns 'heinous' Russian attack on Ukraine city centre, 7 dead

"It is heinous to attack the main square of a large city, in the morning, while people are out walking, some going to church to celebrate a religious day for many Ukrainians," said Denise Brown, the UN's humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine.

Ukraine says three villages retaken in fresh offensive

Analysts at Washington-based think tank the Institute for the Study of War say that Kyiv's forces have launched counteroffensive operations in at least four front-line areas. Later Sunday, deputy defence minister Ganna Malyar said Ukraine's forces had retaken a third village, Makarivka, northwest of Blagodatne.

Fighting in south Ukraine as offensive expectations intensify

Moscow says clashes have intensified since Thursday in the Zaporizhzhia region, particularly around the small town of Orikhiv and towards the larger city of Tokmak, around 40 kilometres (25 miles) to the south in Russian-occupied territory. A Ukrainian military success in the Zaporizhzhia region would enable its forces to break through the land bridge that connects Russia with the Crimean peninsula it annexed from Ukraine. This would be a major reverse for Moscow.

Poland: Russian-made missile fell on our country, killing 2

It was Russia's biggest barrage yet, and some of the missiles crossed into Poland, where two people were killed, according to a U.S. official. It marked the first time in the war that Russian weapons have come down on a NATO country.

Russian airstrikes reported in cities across Ukraine

The barrage of strikes came as air raid alerts were issued across Ukraine. They followed what have been days of euphoria in Ukraine after one of its biggest military successes so far of the nearly nine-month Russian invasion - the retaking last week of the southern city of Kherson.
