    A steady inflow via alum contributions must not lead to a reduction in state budgetary support. The latter is essential to ensure these institutions remain 'public' in the truest sense of the term, and deserving students get a chance to study in IITs.

    IITs step up efforts to raise donations from alumni

    IIT Delhi, which currently has a total endowment reserve of Rs 350 crore from its alumni, looks to add another Rs 250 crore in the next two years, its dean of alumni relations PVM Rao said. Last calendar, the institute raised about Rs 50 crore. “However, one big donation may change these projections as it happened with IIT Bombay with (Nandan) Nilekani’s donation,” Rao said.

      Anonymous charity has both supporters and critics, with some viewing it as philanthropy on a large scale and others seeing it as a way to avoid public scrutiny. While there are valid reasons for donors to remain undisclosed, studies have found that anonymous donations tend to be less generous. However, the aim of anonymous giving is to involve a larger group of small givers who may not benefit beyond personal satisfaction. On the flip side, if the act of giving is celebrated, it should be socially recognized. Ultimately, giving benefits both the recipient and the donor.

      Engineering colleges and B-schools see spike in funding from alumni

      “Till 2016-2017, the institute used to raise an average of Rs 1 crore per year. Now, it has gone up to Rs 32 crore in 2022-23. Funding has more than doubled compared to the pandemic years,” said Professor Arya Kumar, dean, alumni relations at BITS Pilani. The institute has raised more than Rs 73 crore in the last four years from alumni including CSR funding.

      IIT Delhi all set to complete its curriculum review

      The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, is planning to finish its once-a-decade curriculum review -bringing it in line with emerging industry needs-by the end of next year, director Rangan Banerjee told ET.
