Jal Shakti Ministry allocated Rs 98,418 cr in interim budget, Jal Jeevan Mission gets maximum share
The Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), which was launched in 2014 and comes under the DoDWS, has been allocated Rs 7,192 crore for 2024-25. The same amount was allocated to it in 2023-24 as well. Under this mission, Open Defecation Free (ODF) status has been achieved for rural areas, and it is now being implemented to ensure sustainability of the ODF status and cover all villages with solid and liquid waste management arrangements.

About 2,424,540 water bodies have been enumerated in the country by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, out of which 97.1 per cent are in rural areas and only 2.9 per cent are in urban areas. The top five states in terms of a number of water bodies are West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Assam -- which constitute around 63 per cent of the total water bodies in the country.
