Notably, Sri Lanka recently hosted its inaugural Jallikattu event. Despite a 2014 Supreme Court ban, Tamil Nadu's ordinance in 2017 allowed the cultural tradition. In May 2023, the Supreme Court upheld the law, emphasizing Jallikattu's cultural significance and animal welfare measures.

    In a unanimous verdict, a five-judge constitution bench headed by Justice K M Joseph (now retired) had noted The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, 2017, The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Maharashtra Amendment) Act, 2017 and The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Karnataka Second Amendment) Act, 2017 were enacted by the respective state legislatures and had received presidential assent.

    SC verdict on bullock-cart races: Maha ministers call it victory of farmers, promise all assistance for such events

    Maharashtra Excise Minister Shambhuraj Desai on Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court's verdict upholding the validity of amendment laws allowing 'Jallikattu' and bullock-cart races, and said the state government will provide all assistance to organise bullock-cart races. State Revenue and Animal Husbandry Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said the SC's verdict was the victory of farmers.

    Tamilarasan of Chinnapatti who tamed 23 bulls was adjudged the best tamer and was presented the first prize of Chief Minister's car. Mani of Palamedu, who tamed 19 bulls, won the second prize - a two-wheeler while Raja of Palamedu, who tamed 15 bulls won the third prize. "I was inspired by my father who was a bull tamer and had trained under him from a young age," Tamilarasan said indicating that handling bulls was running in his blood.
