    The Myanmar military junta has declared the JF-17 Thunder fighter planes supplied by Pakistan as unfit for operations. The Burmese Air Force was forced to ground the planes due to malfunctions and structural flaws. This has strained relations between Islamabad and Naypyidaw, leading China to intervene. Pakistan is reportedly attempting to renegotiate the deal with newer versions of the JF-17s, but it is unclear if the military junta has accepted the new terms.

    India is eager to join the exclusive club of countries who build and export fighter jets with the hope of consolidating strategic ties with buyer countries. India has been trying to pitch the Tejas, its indigenously built light-combat aircraft, to countries such as Argentina and Egypt. Its efforts to export fighter jets are aimed at trying to counter China's influence, and fighter jet deals are often marked by a characteristic secrecy since the aircraft is customised according to the buyer's special needs.

    Pakistan team sent to Myanmar to repair combat aircraft

    Last year, a senior-level Pakistani military delegation visited Myanmar to inspect a defence industry complex near Yangon and participate in a workshop on JF-17 block II aircraft that Myanmar had purchased from Islamabad, ET had then reported. Another Pakistani team had also visited Myanmar to provide technical assistance to manufacture weapons, ET had reported.

    Myanmar expands defence industrial partnership with Pakistan for JF-17

    While a Pakistani delegation led by Colonel Imran Khan visited Myanmar capital Naypyitaw last week to discuss military cooperation with the junta, in continuation of a series of visits from Pakistan military establishment to Myanmar since September, the junta also hosted a big Russian military delegation to assist it with communication equipment, ET has learnt.
