    In a flashback of sorts, Khan recalled the events of August 18, 1988, when a bill was taken up in the Lok Sabha to award central university status to the Jamia Millia Islamia University. He recalled how two former students of the university protested against some of the provisions of the bill by throwing papers from the visitors' gallery. One of the students was Javed Ali Khan and the other was his friend Raj Vashishth. Javed Ali Khan and Vashishth, as the former general secretary and president of the university, felt it was their responsibility to raise their voice against several provisions of the bill, Khan recalled.
