    Heavy rainfall in northwest, northeast India brings overall deficit down to just 3 pc

    Heavy rains in northwest and northeast India cut the nationwide monsoon deficit from 11% to 3%, IMD states. Central (14% to 8%) and east/northeast (13% to 2%) deficits dropped; south India saw a 13% surplus. Nationwide: 45% normal, 24% excess, 31% deficient rains, totaling 190.6 mm versus 196.9 mm normal. Early onset stalled, delaying rains in West Bengal.

    In 2050, one-third of global river sub-basins are projected to face severe scarcity of clean water due to nitrogen pollution, new research has found. Analysing more than 10,000 global river sub-basins, an international team of researchers found that nitrogen pollution dramatically increased the number of river basin systems considered scarce with regards to its water quality. The supply of clean water for all is one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030.

    8 dead, 23 armymen among 49 missing as flash flood wreaks havoc in Sikkim

    A cloudburst over Lhonak Lake in north Sikkim caused a flash flood in the Teesta River basin, resulting in at least eight deaths and 49 people missing, including 23 army personnel. The flood was worsened by the release of water from the Chungthang dam. Several towns in the Teesta basin were flooded, and parts of National Highway-10 were washed away. The Sikkim government has declared the calamity a disaster, and a flood alert has been issued for North Bengal and Bangladesh. Relief camps have been set up, and the government is providing assistance to those affected.

    Sikkim is expected to receive more rainfall, exacerbating the flash flood situation in the region, according to the India Meteorological Department. The weather agency has issued warnings of widespread rainfall with thunderstorms in Sikkim, as well as in regions such as Jharkhand, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The flash floods have caused significant damage to public infrastructure and properties, with 14 people dead and over 100 missing. The NH-10, a crucial highway, has also been severely impacted.
