Created in 2019, the CAA is a bill that proposed to fast-track the citizenship of all persecuted religious minorities such as Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, and Sikhs in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh in India.
The move to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act, the controversial citizenship bill, seems to have polarised the nation. Tamil superstar Vijay recently called out the act for being against the ethos of religious pluralism and secularism.

The ‘Leo’ star, who is also known by the moniker ‘Thalapathy’, said in a press release, that the move to implement the CAA was politically divisive. He also urged the Tamil Nadu state not to implement the CAA. “A law like the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 is not acceptable in an environment where citizens of the country live with social harmony. The Tamil Nadu government must assure that they will not implement the law in the state,” he stated.

Vijay is far from the only Tamil A-lister to condemn the implementation of the CAA policy. Kamal Haasan also criticised the government’s move to implement the CAA. In a recent media interaction, the ‘Vikram’ star predicted that such a move would impact the communal harmony in India. “In its desperation to win the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the BJP Government has hurriedly notified the Citizenship Amendment Act, on the eve of the elections. The timing of the notification is more questionable, considering the Supreme Court is determining the constitutional validity of this law," said the star.

    Netizens Call Out Vijay

The star’s statement against the implementation of the CAA did not go down well with the netizens. “Tamil Nadu’s very own version of Rahul Gandhi, Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief, Thalapathy Vijay, says CAA is unacceptable to him and will tell Tamilnadu government to not implement it in the state. Wonderful. Is this the same guy who was fined by Madras High Court last year for not paying taxes on his imported car? “ wrote an X user.
