He reminisced about sharing a moment over coffee with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu during a visit to Visakhapatnam. In his address, PM Modi stated, “There are numerous products from India that enjoy high demand globally, and it fills us with pride to see our local products achieving international recognition. One such product is Araku coffee, renowned for its rich flavour and aroma, cultivated extensively in the Alluri Sita Ram Raju district of Andhra Pradesh. Approximately 1.5 lakh tribal families are involved in its cultivation. I recall tasting this coffee with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu Garu in Visakhapatnam. Araku coffee has garnered several global awards and was well-received at the G20 Summit held in Delhi.”

How is Araku Coffee Cultivated?
PM Modi highlighted the role of the Girijan cooperative, which has united local farmers and boosted their income through Araku coffee cultivation. He noted, “About 1.5 lakh tribal families are engaged in cultivating Araku coffee, with the Girijan cooperative playing a crucial role in its success. By uniting local farmers and encouraging them to cultivate Araku coffee, the cooperative has significantly boosted their income.”

What is the GI Tag for Araku Coffee?
Araku coffee received its Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2019, which signifies products originating from a specific geographical area known for their unique qualities.

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal echoed PM Modi's sentiments on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Truly matchless! Andhra Pradesh's GI-tagged Araku coffee is empowering tribals and strengthening brand India globally.”

Where is Araku Coffee Grown?
Araku Valley Arabica coffee is grown in the hilly terrains of the Visakhapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh and the Odisha region, at elevations of 900-1100 metres above sea level. The coffee is produced by tribal communities using organic methods, emphasising practices like organic manures, green manuring, and organic pest management.

Several other Indian coffees have also received GI tags:
  1. Coorg Arabica Coffee: Grown exclusively in Kodagu district, Karnataka.
  2. Wayanad Robusta Coffee: Cultivated in Wayanad district, Kerala.
  3. Chikmagalur Arabica Coffee: Produced in Chikmagalur district, Karnataka.
  4. Bababudangiris Arabica Coffee: Grown in Chikmagalur’s birthplace of coffee, known for its full-bodied flavour with hints of chocolate.
  5. Monsooned Malabar Robusta Coffee: A distinctive specialty from Kerala, renowned for its unique taste.
