HDFC Bank’s $173 billion merger with its parent creates a ‘lucrative’ arbitrage trade in India
Domestic equity mutual fund managers in India have reportedly purchased a net $570m worth of HDFC shares ahead of its merger with parent company Housing Development Finance Corp. in a "lucrative" arbitrage trade, according to Prime Database. Capitalising on the share-swap ratio upon completion, fund managers hope the merger will enable them to purchase shares at a discount to HDFC Bank’s current price. The merger is effective from 1 July, with HDFC Bank absorbing the parent company. HDFC shares rose by around 2.3% on 9 June.
Sebi allows direct mkt access facility to FPIs for participating in exchange traded commodity derivatives
Indian capital markets regulator Sebi has allowed exchanges to extend direct market access (DMA) to foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) to participate in exchange-traded commodity derivatives (ETCDs). Following discussions with its Commodity Derivatives Advisory Committee, Sebi said it had decided to allow stock exchanges to extend the DMA to FPIs in ETCDs based on representations received and subject to certain conditions. Sebi permitted FPIs to participate in cash-settled non-agricultural commodity derivative contracts in September 2022, while alternate investment funds, portfolio management services and mutual funds were given permission in 2017.
