AHMEDABAD: A 27-year-old woman who is seven months pregnant, on Thursday filed a complaint against her father, uncle, cousin and cousin’s friend for allegedly abducting her because she married her childhood friend, against their wishes.
Upasna Patel, a resident of the Pradhanmantri Awas Yojana colony near Vande Mataram Circle in Gota, in her FIR with Sola police said that she and her husband Chirag Patel studied in the same school and were friends.
They fell in love and told their parents about their relationship. Her parents did not like the idea of a woman marrying a man of her own choice and refused to give their sanction, Upasna said in the FIR.
Upasna and Chirag eloped on Sept 23, 2023, got their
marriage registered on Sept 25, 2023, at Saraspur village in Modasa taluka. As they were in fear of Upasna’s family, they kept moving to evade them.
For the past 10 days, the couple had been staying with Chirag’s sister, Jinkal Patel, in Gota.
Upasna stated that her family has severed ties with her. Her uncle, Shailesh Bavalia, a resident of Bodeli in Chhota Udepur, had been pressuring her to return and was threatening to kill Chirag, she added.
On Wednesday night, Upasna and Chirag went to the vegetable market in Gota. A car arrived carrying her father, Lalit Gadhia, a resident of Lathidad village in Botad; Bavalia; her cousin Sachin Jakasania, a resident of the Vastrapur area of the city; and Sachin’s friend, Yogesh Khadoda.
Jakasania and Khadoda began assaulting Chirag. Gadhia and Bavalia pushed Upasna into their car. The four then allegedly abducted her and took her to Chhota Udepur.
She said she was taken to Bodeli. When she said she would file a police complaint against them, they let her go, near Karali police station in Chhota Udepur.
Meanwhile, Chirag had informed the Ahmedabad city police control room about the abduction.
Upasna was sent to Sola police station from Karali police station on Thursday and lodged a complaint later that night.
Sola police have registered an FIR for kidnapping, causing hurt, criminal intimidation and abetment against Gadhia, Bavalia, Jakasania and Khadoda.
