AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) on Thursday announced that starting this academic year, students who have cleared Class 10 with basic mathematics will be eligible for admission to Class 11 science stream in A or AB groups without having to take the supplementary standard maths exam.

Basic maths enough for admission to A, AB groups

The board introduced basic and standard mathematics in the 2021-22 academic year. Students wishing to continue studying mathematics after Class 10 are given the option of standard maths, while those who don’t, can opt for basic maths. Those choosing basic maths could take admission only in Class 11 Group B, but not A or AB groups.
If a student clearing Class 10 with basic maths wanted to get admission in Class 11 science stream in A or AB groups, he or she had to clear the standard maths exam during supplementary exam. This is no longer needed.
“We have decided to allow all Class 10 students to opt for Class 11 science stream and opt for A or AB groups regardless of whether they had opted for basic or standard mathematics in Class 10. They will no longer need to take and clear standard mathematics exams during supplementary exams. We found that clearing standard maths exams after getting admission in Class 11 science was a hurdle as many of them could not clear the exam. This decision will come into effect starting from this academic year,” Dinesh Patel, vice chairman, GSHSEB, told TOI .

The vice chairman added that the board will shortly make necessary changes in the rules.
Experts said that science students in Group A are likely to increase because of this decision as several students who had opted for basic mathematics but were unsure whether they will be able to clear standard maths supplementary exam will now take admission in Class 11 science stream.
As per data supplied by the state board data, 8.01 lakh Class 10 students had opted for basic maths for the final exams this year while only 81,491 students had opted for standard maths.
