‘Didn’t expect big defeat for Suresh’

The election results delivered a significant blow to state Congress president DK Shivakumar, undermining his political ambitions on several fronts. Here is what he shared at a press conference.
What about your brother Suresh’s defeat?
Even in Kanakapura, we were hoping that Suresh would get a lead of 50,000 to 60,000 votes. But we got only 26,000 votes.

- I congratulate Dr Manjunath on his victory in our constituency. But it is not the victory of JD(S), but that of a good candidate. They put up a good candidate and that too on a BJP ticket. It was a well calculated move. I had not expected that we would lose Bangalore Rural by a huge margin.
Your response to the party’s performance in Karnataka...
- We have gone up from one seat to nine. But we had expected to win 14-15 seats. As KPCC president, I accept the decision of the voters. I think today the politics of confidence has won over politics of power in the country.
What went wrong for Congress?
- I’m also wondering why we got less seats. We were confident that we would win more seats as we had implemented all our guarantees successfully. People of our state are well informed and I don’t want to question their decision. We will analyse our performance seat by seat, and find out the reasons for our setback. If there are any mistakes and shortcomings, we’ll rectify them.
How do you see BJP’s performance across the nation?
- Their claim to win over 400 seats has not come true. This election has also proved that Modi’s popularity has diminished across the country. They have unexpectedly got some numbers from states like Bihar, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh and it has put them in a position to form the govt with the help of alliance partners.
